Almanegra de Ventanas Magnolia is a canopy tree that only lives in Alto de Ventanas in Antioquia department in the Colombian Andes. It’s one of 46 magnolia species that grows in Colombia.The trees have dark streaked trunks and can reach 25 meters (82 feet) tall. These magnolias thrive near the edges of pristine forests or in areas of regrowing forest. Much of the forests where the magnolia lives have been cleared for dairy farms.
There are only about 70 adult Almanegra de Ventanas Magnolia left in the wild and the patches of forest where they live are not connected to each other. The magnolia flowers and fruits between February and April.
Conservationists are growing new Almanegra de Ventanas Magnolia trees from seeds and testing which habitats the trees prefer.
