The Cozumel Harvest Mouse only lives on Cozumel Island off Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The nocturnal mouse lives in the trees of dense secondary forest and forest edges where there are lots of vines. This arboreal mouse makes whistling calls at dusk as it prepares for an active evening.
The Cozumel Harvest Mouse population is extremely small, numbering about 200 mice across four isolated subpopulations. The numbers of the species fluctuate dramatically with severe weather events, such as hurricanes. The biggest threat to the species is non-native predators including feral cats, dogs and Boa Constrictors. Other mouse species and house rats also compete with the Cozumel Harvest Mouse for food and other resources on the island.
